The field of study known as “Cultural Studies” has been mostly about popular culture and social movements. This talk is a reflection upon issues around doing traditional culture from the approaches of cultural studies. The speaker will draw on his own experience of crossing over from literary to cultural studies in investigating traditional Chinese theatre and rethink these questions: the marginality of some areas of cultural study, the “inter” and boundary-crossing condition of traditional cultural forms in cultural studies, the claiming and disclaiming the identity of doing cultural studies, the interaction between traditional disciplines and cultural studies, as well as the enchantment and disenchantment in doing cultural studies
