In the field of cavity optomechanics, we have gained a great deal of control over mechanical systems using radiation pressure. Traditionally, this is achieved using "dispersive" optomechanical coupling (wherein mechanical motion modulates the frequency of an optical resonator), but it is also possible to exploit these forces with a "dissipative" coupling, wherein mechanical motion modulates a cavity's decay rate.In this thesis, we present a membrane-at-the-edge system, which consists of a membrane positioned a few microns from one mirror of a centimeters-long Fabry-Perot optical cavity.
