Birth asphyxia is one of the major cause of mortality and morbidity of newborns worldwide. Therapeutic hypothermia is the current treatment in term asphyxiated newborns in order to try preventing the development of brain injury. Induced hypothermia is believed to work by decreasing brain temperature and thus reducing baseline brain's metabolism and energy demand. Despite this treatment, some of the asphyxiated newborns still develop brain injury.
