This dissertation presents a study that investigates the evolution of governance approaches of an open source software (OSS) ecosystem in the health care setting. Members of such OSS ecosystems, often separated by space and time, cooperate to create common goods. While these communities have proliferated in recent times, we still know little about the dynamics of how a workforce that is led by its own users and operates mostly on a volunteer basis coordinates its activities.
