Keeping a finger on the pulse of East African weakly electric fishes: ecology and hypoxia tolerance of mormyrids in Lake Nabugabo, Uganda

Little of the vast body of literature devoted to the fishes of the Lake Victoria Basin (LVB) has examined the region's mormyrids (African weakly electric fishes). These animals emit and detect electric organ discharges (EODs) for both active sensation and communication purposes. In the first chapter of my thesis, I describe the distribution and habitat of mormyrids in the Lake Nabugabo system in Uganda—a microcosm of Lake Victoria. Like Lake Victoria, Lake Nabugabo's native fish community was devastated by a predatory fish introduced in the mid-20th century, the Nile perch (Lates niloticus). Several persisting native fishes in the LVB primarily inhabit hypoxic wetland refugia, including ecotones (habitat transition zones) separating open waters from swamps. Extremely low mormyrid abundances have been reported in open waters and the wetland-lake ecotone of Lake Nabugabo over the past 25 years, but this could reflect an inadequacy of conventional sampling gears when applied to weakly electric fish. In this study, mormyrid species abundance was quantified by detecting and recording EODs in situ. I found strong evidence for the existence of two distinct mormyrid communities separated by 4 km of dense swamp: one along the moderately oxygenated margin between the lake and the surrounding Lwamunda Swamp, and the other in the extremely hypoxic swamp floodplain margin. In my second chapter, I examine the effects of hypoxia on the EOD behaviour of the mormyrid Gnathonemus victoriae from the Lwamunda Swamp. I found that while a widely accepted metric for hypoxia tolerance—the critical oxygen tension for metabolic rate—corresponds to diel dissolved oxygen (DO) minima (early morning), night-time DO may limit the rate with which these fish can acquire electrosensory information about their surroundings and their conspecifics. This reflects the biology of these mormyrids in that they are nocturnal, and that higher locomotor activity correlates tightly with EOD rate (and therefore sensory information acquisition rate) in these animals. Quantifying metabolic and EOD rates simultaneously thus allowed a nuanced understanding of hypoxia tolerance in this species. Together, these chapters provide comprehensive groundwork from which to study the ecology of these fishes in this model ecosystem and insight into environmental hypoxia's effects on sensory acquisition.Des nombreuses études concernant les poissons du bassin du Lac Victoria (BLV), très peu traitent des Mormyridés (les poissons faiblement électriques africains) de la région. Ces animaux émettent et détectent des décharges produites par leur organe électrique pour la perception active et la communication. Dans le premier chapitre de ma thèse, je décris la distribution et l'habitat des Mormyridés du Lac Nabugabo, en Ouganda, un microcosme du Lac Victoria. Comme au Lac Victoria, la communauté des poissons natifs du Lac Nabugabo a été dévastée par un prédateur envahissant introduit dans les années cinquante: la perche du Nile (Lates niloticus). Beaucoup de poissons natifs qui persistent dans le BLV habitent les refuges hypoxiques des milieux humides et des zones transitoires (écotones) entre la zone pélagique du lac et les marais avoisinants. Depuis les années 1990, très peu de Mormyridés se retrouvaient dans la zone pélagique et dans les écotones marécageux au bord du lac, mais ceci pourrait être le résultat des méthodes d'échantillonnage classiques en ichtyologie qui ne fonctionnent pas très bien pour capturer les Mormyridés. Dans cette étude, l'abondance des espèces mormyridées a été quantifiée par une méthode basée sur la détection et l'enregistrement des décharges de l'organe électrique (DOE) in situ. Ces données suggèrent l'existence de deux communautés mormyridées distinctes séparées par 4 km de marais presqu'anoxique: une des communautés se retrouve dans l'écotone marécageux modérément oxygéné entre le lac et le milieu humide environnant (le marais Lwamunda), alors que l'autre se retrouve dans l'écotone terrestre-marais qui est extrêmement hypoxique. Dans le deuxième chapitre de la thèse, j'explore les effets de l'hypoxie sur les DOE du Mormyridé Gnathonemus victoriae du marais Lwamunda. J'ai trouvé qu'une mesure commune de la tolérance à l'hypoxie—la concentration d'oxygène critique pour le taux métabolique—correspond au minimum quotidien d'oxygène dissous (tôt le matin) caractérisant l'habitat de différentes populations, alors que les concentrations d'oxygène dissous nocturnes peuvent quant à elles limiter le taux de décharges électriques et donc l'information obtenue par rapport au milieu et aux congénères. Ce résultat reflète la biologie de ces poissons qui sont plus actifs la nuit (en termes de mouvement et de DOE). La quantification simultanée des taux métabolique et DOE a ainsi apporté une compréhension plus nuancée de la tolérance à l'hypoxie chez G. victoriae. Dans son ensemble, cette thèse établit un cadre pour l'étude de l'écologie des Mormyridés dans l'écosystème modèle qu'est le BLV et dresse un aperçu des effets de l'hypoxie environnementale sur les systèmes sensoriels.
