Little of the vast body of literature devoted to the fishes of the Lake Victoria Basin (LVB) has examined the region's mormyrids (African weakly electric fishes). These animals emit and detect electric organ discharges (EODs) for both active sensation and communication purposes. In the first chapter of my thesis, I describe the distribution and habitat of mormyrids in the Lake Nabugabo system in Uganda—a microcosm of Lake Victoria. Like Lake Victoria, Lake Nabugabo's native fish community was devastated by a predatory fish introduced in the mid-20th century, the Nile perch (Lates niloticus).
