Composting is an exothermic process that results in the degradation of organic matter into a useful material that can be used as a soil amendment in agricultural applications. Since it is exothermic, useful energy from the process can be captured in the form of electricity or heat for air and water. A pilot scale experiment was developed to observe the effects of flow rate in a heat exchanger energy extraction system where copper tubes are inserted in composted filled barrels. Results showed that greater energy was extracted with higher flow rates.
