Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) remains one of the most successful human pathogens. Approximately two million people die of TB annually and eight to ten million new cases of active TB are documented each year. The only available vaccine against TB is Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG). Despite that the efficacy of BCG varies considerably in protecting adults from pulmonary TB, BCG offers protection in children. Previous studies have shown that BCG is missing the most dominant T cell antigens of Mtb (e.g. ESAT-6, CFP-10) and that there is no direct link between BCG-specific T cells and protection against TB.
