Transport plays a crucial role in urban development by providing access to education, markets, employment, recreation, health care and other key services. In Canada, on-road traffic accounts for 19% of nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions and in Montreal, Canada's second largest city, transportation accounts for 85% of NOx emissions.
