Neurons in the early visual cortex are some of the most well-studied cells in the visual system. These neurons can be classified into two distinct types based on their responses to the spatial phase of visual stimuli. Simple cells are dependent on spatial phase whereas complex cells are phase invariant. An appealing aspect of simple cells is that they can be modeled as a quasi-linear system. Due to the phase invariance, complex cells are much harder to estimate, requiring heavily parameterized models.
