Using cloud-resolving simulations, this study investigates the mechanisms and sensitivities of deep-convection initiation over an idealized surface-based convergence zone. A band of diurnal sensible heatflux centered in x over an otherwise unheated domain surface results in a convergence band and a quasi-linear boundary layer updraft with an amplitude of ∼2.4 ms−1 , centered on the heat anomaly, that forces cumulus convection. These initially shallow cumuli deepen progressively and, in favorable conditions, transition into deep convection. To investigate the mechanisms influencing this transition, a statistical method based on a thermal-tracking algorithm is developed, that follows cumulus cores from their formation up to their decay.
