The primate visual system contains several pathways within which visual information is processed in parallel. Despite the widely distributed nature of sensory processing, our visual system effortlessly combines multiple visual attributes, such as colour, depth and motion to form a unitary percept. According to the Gestalt principle of "common fate", visual elements that move together are perceived as parts of a bigger structure. Furthermore, several studies have shown that the human visual system has the ability to detect fine similarities in the motion pattern of multiple elements.
