The important role that the vestibular system plays during everyday life becomes all too apparent for patients with severe vestibular dysfunction, who suffer from encumbering symptoms such as blurred vision, postural instability and vertigo. Although some patients do learn to compensate for their injury, there is no adequate treatment option for those who cannot. Vestibular prosthetic devices transmit head motion information to the brain, bypassing the damaged vestibular periphery through electrical stimulation of the vestibular nerve, and could provide a treatment option for patients enduring symptoms associated with vestibular loss.
