Structural-functional correlative studies were carried out in Sprague-Dawley rats to investigate the effects of three catecholamines, isoproterenol, norepinephrine and epinephrine, on myocardium. The findings were grouped in three categories: 1. Continuous intravenous infusion of 4-6 microgram/100 g body weight/ minute isoproterenol and norepinephrine administration produced irreversible lesions while epinephrine produced reversible cardiac muscle cell changes. Contraction band formation characterized the effect of isoproterenol, whereas myofilament lysis followed norepinephrine infusion. 2.
