Taxonomic studies in the Acanthaceae; the genus Hypoestes in southern Africa

A taxonomic revision of the southern African species of the genus Hypoestes Soland. ex R. Br. is presented. Three species and three (two newly described) varieties are recognized, viz. Hypoestes aristata var. aristata, H. aristata var. alba, H. aristata var. thiniorum, H. forskaolii and H. triflora. The taxonomic value of morphology, pollen, cystoliths and indumentum is discussed.
