ObjectivesTo assess trends in quinolone susceptibility of Enterobacteriaceae isolated in a large university hospital.MethodsBetween 1992 and 1998, bacterial isolates were collected each year during a 3-month period to evaluate annual changes in susceptibility. In addition, the activities of fluoroquinolones (pefloxacin, norfloxacin, ofloxacin, ciprofloxacin) against nalidixic acid-resistant strains were determined by disk diffusion and MIC methodologies during the first and last year of the study.ResultsThe susceptibility of Enterobacteriaceae to nalidixic acid was unchanged between 1992 and 1998 (86% versus 85%).
