Introduction/Background: MRI is used to examine various body parts and functions in the body to answer many different questions concerning pathology. Although MRI doesn’t expose patients for radiation and is generally considered as a safe procedure it is not a problem free examination. For many patients MRI-exams are associated with feelings of anxiety and fear. Aim: The purpose of this literature review is to highlight the environmental factors that affect the patient experience at an MRI examination. What the machine's technical design affects the experience, for example, on its design, sound and function has an effect on the patient’s experience of an exam. Methods: A literature review based on Friberg's model. 16 scientific articles were searched in the databases CINAHL and PubMed. Results: MRI can be experienced insulating, patients may feel placed in a vulnerable situation. Similarities with other confined spaces give unpleasant associations, such as lying in a coffin before cremation. The sounds of the machine are perceived as strong, unpleasant and may even interfere with vital communication with the operator. Discussion: The level of sound in the MRI causes the patients inconvenience, it might cause damage to the hearing and disturbed important communication. Problems related to the closed area in MRT remains even though the technology improves. Perhaps the use MRI with an open scanner technique should be explored more thoroughly. Conclusion: Inconvenience associated with MRI can make patients pass or fail to endure examinations. MRI has a lot of aspects that influence the experience of the exam. The shape of the camera makes patients feel isolated and exposed mostly because of the fact that the patient’s sight and hearing is limited inside the tunnel due to the narrowness of the tunnel and the loud sounds of the machine but also because the machinery only enables a very limited communication with the outside world.Validerat; 20150212 (global_studentproject_submitter)
