Från nyanländ till nyanställd : En fallstudie av ett integrationsprojekt i Kalix kommun

The purpose of this study was to study a successful municipal integration project, in order to identify the success factors that have paved the way for a labour market entry of newly arrived immigrants with limited educational background. The analyse of the project has been based on a theoretical framework that identifies three different layers; social-organizational and individual layer, to create an overall picture of interacting factors. Earlier research on labour market integration has complemented the theoretical material. The empirical data collection was done primary through interviews with project managers, four project participants and two employers who have hired participants of the project when it was completed. The results of the study show that the good outcome of the project mainly derives from the societal level where a new learning model in the Swedish language training for immigrants has been designed. The new model is about moving the learning of language from the classroom to the workplace, where teachers from sfi along with selected representatives from the companies acted as tutors for participants on designated internships. The results indicate that the new arrivals through contact with Swedes has taught language in a more effective way, as they have been practicing the language verbally at their workplaces. Language skills has, in combination with professional experience and references from Swedish working life, led to better conditions for labour market entry. Integration factors at the community level may not completely explain an individual's entry into working life. The study shows that factors at the individual level, such as motivation and commitment, are of great importance when immigrants become employed.
