It is generally believed that William C. Hunter (1821-1891) was the first American to devote himself to the study of the Chinese language in the 1820s. Hunter claimed that none of the Chinese in Guangzhou (Canton) could read or write English in the 1820s, and he was the only American who knew Chinese. After his arrival in China, Samuel W. Williams 衛三畏 (1812-1884) pointed out that very few foreigners were willing to spend their time learning the Chinese language.
