Cardiovascular disease is highly prevalent in patients with chronic kidney failure treated using dialysis. The risk of cardiovascular events is estimated to be at least 2- to 10-fold higher in dialysis patients than in age-, race-, and sex-matched persons with normal kidney function. A significant proportion of cardiovascular events in long-term dialysis patients is caused by heart failure, and the presence of heart failure is predictive of a poor prognosis. Despite the significant morbidity and mortality associated with heart failure, very few therapeutic options are proved to prevent and treat the progression of this complication in dialysis patients.
