Within the past few decades, educational researchers and organisations have recognised the potential benefits digital technologies can bring to the mathematics classroom. Computer Algebra System (CAS) technologies have been available since the 1980s, but were only first incorporated into Australian Victorian schools in 2001 in the form of a pilot study. Currently, the Victorian senior secondary mathematics curriculum requires the use of CAS technology both in the teaching of the discipline and as part of its high stakes examinations. Implementation of a technology, however, does not guarantee that it will be used in the way researchers have envisioned.
