The U.S. Epigraphy Project (http://usepigraphy.brown.edu) was started in 1995 at Rutgers University by John Bodel (then at Rutgers) and Steven Tracy (then director of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens). The first manifestation of the project was a print volume by the project directors, Greek and Latin Inscriptions in the USA: A Checklist, which appeared in 1997. The Checklist provided short entries on the epigraphic collections, including some 2,300 inscriptions (720 Greek and 1,575 Latin) reported to Bodel and Tracy that were held by museums, universities, private individuals, and other institutions throughout the United States
