A study on language style of family interaction in Chen's family

This study is a sociolinguistics study specifically the language style. The writer is curious to find out the language style used by certain Khek Bangka people. The subjects of the study is Chen's family. Chen's family is a family that consists of a father, six sons, four daughters, and their spouses. The writer wants to know the language style used by the father when talking to his children and the in-law; the language style used by the children when talking to the father and the language style used by the sons and daughters as brothers and sisters when communicating and also the language style used by the in-laws when talking to father-in-law. The underlying theories of the study are language style and language variation. Besides, the writer uses parameter to guide her in doing the study that is the characteristics of the language styles. She also uses some social factors to guide her in interpreting the data, namely the topic, the setting, the participants and the personal feelings of the participants. Furthermore, she uses the interaction analysis since the mode of the data is the spoken conversations. Based on the interaction analysis, she will take and analyze the data without any manipulation. From the data analysis, the writer finds out that the language style used by the father when talking to his sons and daughters is the intimate style; the language style used by the sons and daughters to their father as well as one to another is the intimate style; and the language style used by the father when talking to the in-laws is the casual style. The influencing aspects of choosing the appropriate language style are the topic of the interactions and the personal feelings towards the addressee. The writer also finds out that there is a language with no language variation. It is the Chinese Khek Bangka and Bangka Malay. Bangka people will use the same language (Chinese Khek Bangka/ Bangka Malay) when talking to older people or friends. Therefore, this thing also influence ones language style
