A study on the Surabaya dialect shift displayed by the Javanese younger generations at Jalan Petemon Timur Surabaya

This study was done because of the phenomenon that the Javanese Younger Generations in a big city like Surabaya tend to speak Bahasa Indonesia instead of Surabaya dialect. The data of this study were collected with a tape recorder and a diary. The recorded data ware transcribed and analyzed under the parameters of: languages used, setting and scane, participants, and, and act sequence. The data analysis results show that most of the subjects under the study speak Bahasa Indonesia, whenever they are in informal situations such as at home, at public transportation, etc. The main reasons why they do so are interlocutors, end of conversation, the prestige of Bahasa Indonesia as the first language in Indonesia, the habit of speaking Bahasa Indonesia, the affect of Indonesian TV programmes, and the pitch, intonation, juncture of Bahasa Indonesia that are softer and more polite than Surabaya dialect. This study, the writer believes, is far from perfect as there are likely several shortcomings in terms of its scope, instruments, the procedures of analysing the data and many others.
