Stylistic analysis on Robert Frost’s poems

This study is conducted to reveal the stylistic devices that are used by Robert Frost in his poems which were written in his third volume: Mountain Interval 1916. In addition to best known poems and one of the most cherishable characteristics of poetry, this volume solidified and enlarged Robert Frost's achievement. The result of the stylistic analysis reveals the characteristics of Robert Frost's works. The nature of this study is qualitative-quantitative since the data consisting of the four poems of Robert Frost in his third volume: Mountain Interval (1916) are in the form of words and numbers or statistics. So, the researcher applied a content analysis as the technique to analyze them. Through the analysis, it is found that Robert Frost uses different stylistic devices to express his ideas, feelings, and thoughts in his poems. For this matter, he wants mankind to be very well aware of their own lives since life is too short. Related to tones, Robert Frost uses regretful, desperate, and optimistic tones. Imperative and declarative functions are also used. In terms of choices of words, informal dictions are used since his poems express human beings' lives as a whole which are full of temptation, barriers, and realities. People must be very careful about their lives. In addition, he uses imageries, such as an imagery of sight, an imagery of movement, and so on to indicate his own characteristics. Related to figures of speech, there are symbols. allusions, similes, metaphors, and so on. In accordance with grammatical choices, the uses of grammars, ellipsis, inversion, and deviation can be found in those poems. While concerning the pattern, the poet applies continuous form, stanzaic form, free verse, blank verse, narrative type, lyric type, dramatic type, repetition and parallelism to indicate that human beings must be very active to achieve their goals in their lives and to realize realities in the world and to highlight the importance of his inner ideas, feelings, and thoughts in his poems. He also wants to emphasize human beings' lives in order that they have to act wisely. As a conclusion, the researcher believes that by doing stylistic analysis students can enrich their profound understanding of English vocabulary and have a better understanding and appreciation of the literary works especially English or American poems. For the student of literature, they can analyze the poems profoundly and effectively by analyzing the codes found in it. For teachers of EFL, stylistic analysis may give theoretical input and suggested techniques for teaching. It can be applied as a means of introducing the interconnectedness the concept of Pragmatics, Discourse Analysis, and stylistics to the students. For society or laymen, it can be used to be a reminder towards their own lives
