Representasi muslim Arab dalam film-film Hollywood: analisis wacana kritis muslim other dalam sinema Hollywood

ABSTRACT: This study discusses the representation of Muslim Arab identity in Hollywood films, through three films produced before and after September 2001. The problem presented in this research is the representation of Muslim Arab identity through the discourse of barbarism, polarity of Muslim Arab identity , and women Muslim identity. The problem of Muslim Arab identity emerged from the previous researches that Muslim representation in Hollywood cinema strongly stereotype the Muslim Arab. This study aims at understanding the politics of representing identity of Muslim Arab by Hollywood, based on the reading of three films The Siege (1998), Kingdom of Heaven (2005) dan Syriana (2005). The approach of this study is cultural studies and critical discourse analysis. Cultural studies emphasizes the analysis of identity representation. Fairclough critical discourse analysis apply three levels of analysis, micro, mezo and macro. At micro level, it focuses on the verbal text and picture. For analysing the picture, the CDA Theo van Leeuwen is applied. At macro level, analysis focuses on the social context of a text. At mezo level or discourse analysis, it focuses on the relation between text and social context. The findings of this study is as following. First, Muslim Arab is represented in different ways. The Siege focuses on discourse of barbarism in the construct of Muslim terrorist and in Syriana, Muslim terrorist is the victim and resistance against the practice of neoliberalism of multinational corporation. Those two films give contested ideas of terrorist from the internal American, in the The Siege, the general who does terror is considered as personal action, while in Syriana, the terror by the corporation and CIA is constructed as brutal terror. The social political context of The Siege is the post-Cold War, in which Huntington thesis is applied. In Syriana, under the social political context of post 2001, it shows that it is important to criticize the mainstream neoliberalism and neoimperialism by US in the third world countries. In Kingdom of Heaven, barbaric Muslim Arab is constructed as the attacker as the opposed of Christian West defender. Those three films construct male heroism of Western/American white male.Second, the identity Muslim Arab in the three films is constructed in the polarity of binary opposition, bad-good Muslim, neoliberal-nationalist Muslim, moderate- fanatical Muslim. Thrid, those three films support , Muslim Arab women stereotyping that is unexisted. The result of this research shows that in the globalization era of post Cold War, politics of identity of Hollywood is more pluralistic. Hollywood represents the American self identity and at the same time the other self of the identity, while the Muslim Arab is represented in bipolar, as the others that become part of the American self and the others that is really strange. INTISARI: Penelitian ini membahas representasi identitas Muslim Arab dalam film-film Hollywood, melalui tiga film yang diproduksi sebelum dan sesudah peristiwa pemboman 11 September 2001. Disertasi ini menyodorkan permasalahan representasi identitas Muslim Arab, melalui wacana barbarisme, polarisasi identitas Muslim Arab dan identitas perempuan Muslim Arab. Kajian ini bertujuan untuk memahami politik representasi identitas Muslim Arab yang dilakukan oleh sinema Hollywood, dengan berbasis pada pembacaan tiga film Hollywood The Siege (1998), Kingdom of Heaven (2005) dan Syriana (2005). Kajian ini menggunakan pendekatan kajian budaya dan analisis wacana kritis. Kajian budaya sebagai sebuah pendekatan menekankan analisis kritis praktik representasi identitas. Analisis wacana kritis Fairclough membagi analisis dalam tiga tataran, mikro, mezo dan makro. Pada tataran mikro memfokuskan pada teks verbal dan gambar film. Untuk analisis teks gambar bergerak, CDA Theo van Leeuwen digunakan. Yang kedua, tataran makro atau konteks sosial, menganalisis konteks sosial suatu teks. Analisis tingkat mezo atau analisis wacana, yakni analisis yang menghubungkan antara teks dan konteks sosial. Temuan penelitian ini sebagai berikut. Pertama, Muslim Arab direpresentasikan secara berbeda dalam wacana Muslim barbar pada ketiga film. The Siege mewacanakan barbarisme dalam konstruk teroris Muslim yang kejam dan dalam Syriana, teroris Muslim muncul sebagai korban dan resistensi atas praktik neoliberalisme korporasi multinasional. Dalam kedua film identitas liyan terorisme mendapat tandingan dari dalam atau diri Amerika sendiri, namun dalam The Siege, tokoh jendral Amerika sebagai teroris hanya menjadi oknum sementara aksi teror yang dilakukan oleh korporasi Amerika dan CIA dalam Syriana dikonstruk sebagai tindakan teror brutal. Konteks sosial politik film The Siege adalah pasca Perang Dingin, dengan teori benturan peradaban Huntington menjadi tesis konflik yang muncul. Dalam Syriana, dengan konteks sosial politik setelah 2001, menunjukkan bahwa penting untuk melakukan kritik tajam terhadap neoliberalisme dan neoimperialisme yang dipraktikkan korporasi dan negara Amerika di negara dunia ketiga. Dalam Kingdom of Heaven, Muslim Arab barbar muncul dalam konstruk pasukan Muslim sebagai penyerang. Ketiga film mengonstruk kepahlawanan dari laki-laki Barat/Amerika. Kedua, konstruk identitas Muslim Arab dalam ketiga film dalam polaritas oposisi biner, Muslim baik-Muslim jahat, Muslim neoliberal Muslim nasionalis, dan Muslim moderat-fanatik. Ketiga, ketiga film ini mendukung kokohnya stereotip perempuan Muslim Arab yang eksisistensinya tidak terlihat. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa dalam era globalisasi pasca Perang Dingin, politik identitas sinema Hollywood menjadi lebih plural. Hollywood merepresentasikan diri sendiri dengan identitas diri dan sekaligus liyan yang ada dalam diri, sementara Muslim Arab direpresentasikan dalam polaritas, yakni sebagai liyan yang menjadi bagian dari identitas diri Amerika dan liyan yang benar-benar asing
