People who have recently been released from prison experience chronic disadvantage, poor physical and mental health, high rates of substance misuse, high rates of recidivism and a markedly elevated rate of mortality. The poverty of their experience indicates that post-release integration into community is often unsuccessful. Little is known about the health of recently released prisoners or about what works in terms of improving health outcomes for this group. Among those with intellectual disability, these challenges are particularly pronounced. However little is known about the experiences of ex-prisoners with an intellectual disability, or about ways to assist these individuals as they strive to integrate into mainstream society
