The objective of this research project is the intensification of anaerobic wastewater treatment by the use of electrochemical oxidation. By the use of this electrochemical technique as a pretreatment step or in recycle of an anaerobic reactor, inhibitory components such as monohalogenated aromatics can be electrochemically oxidized in order to assure better biodegradability. As a model compound, 4-chlorophenol is used for the evaluation of the electrochemical oxidation technique. As electrode materials, a titanium cathode was chosen in combination with a titanium anode which is coated with a mixed metal oxide (RuO2-IrO2).
