Interaction of HVDC grids and AC power systems A new transmission system is required that can connect the huge renewable energy resources ofnorth and south Europe with the load centers located more centrally.A HVDC grid is considered to be a likely option to connect these sources. Such a grid should be able to cover long distances, also undersea, and provide a better economic performance than traditional AC systems. The existing AC system will not be obsolete it will be operated inparallel to the new system. Thereby the interaction between both systems has to be analysed and coordinated.
