Despite widespread roll out of anti-retroviral therapy (ART), cryptococcal meningitis (CM) remains a significant cause of morbidity and mortality among HIV-infected persons in sub-Saharan Africa. Host immune response is central to the pathogenesis, and not only influences susceptibility to infection, but clinical presentation and outcome. Animal studies suggest that macrophage activation is a crucial component of the host immune response but human studies are limited.
