This thesis is concerned with understanding the patient flow from diagnosis of HIV infection to initiation of antiretroviral therapy (ART). Untreated HIV-infected individuals have a high risk of progression to AIDS and death, and of transmitting infection to others. Interventions to ensure prompt linkage into HIV care and ART could have substantial individual and public health benefits. At the turn of the millennium, very few HIV-infected individuals in sub-Saharan Africa had access to lifesaving ART.
