Beyrouth: Quarante ans de croissance urbaine

There is a lack of statistical data available in Lebanon. This study therefore uses remote sensing to assess the physical growth of Beirut, in 1963, 1987, 1994, 1998 and 2003, on the basis of morphological criteria. Over time, the city has expanded substantially and become linear. The reconstruction period after the civil war saw a massive increase in urbanisation, contrasting with the war years, which did not give rise to such dramatic change, despite the political upheavals.Dans un contexte de pénurie statistique, cet article propose de mesurer la croissance de l'agglomération de Beyrouth dans les années 1963, 1987, 1994, 1998 et 2003, sur la base de critères morphologiques. L'étendue de l'agglomération augmente fortement et de manière linéaire. La période de la reconstruction après la guerre civile se distingue par un pic d'urbanisation, alors que la période de la guerre, malgré les bouleversements politiques, ne donne pas lieu à des évolutions aussi brutales.http://mappemonde.mgm.fr/num7/articles/art05305.htm
