Tomando dados que apontam as relações de grupos subalternos (quase sempre associados ao caos social e ao crime), indígenas e escravos com membros das elites locais na região oriental do Rio da Prata, o artigo salienta a importância destas relações para desenvolvimento e manutenção de negócios atlânticos que envolviam o comércio de couros, tabaco, aguardente e escravos.
