Retrospective analysis of canine diabetes mellitus

The aim of this study was to analyse the data about diabetic dogs, clinical signs of their disease, concurrent diseases, applied diagnostic tests, treatment strategies and their effectiveness, disease outcome, and to compare the results with the findings of the foreign scientists. The data were collected during 2005–2014 years at Dr. L. Kriauceliunas small animal veterinary clinic of the Veterinary academy, Lithuanian university of health sciences. 60 dogs were diagnosed with diabetes mellitus, and morbidity of 0,26% was calculated (95% CI 0,19–0,33). Strong body weight association with disease was identified (p<0,001), with most affected dogs being less than 20 kg. Mean age of the patients was 8,56±0,43 years, but purebred dogs got the disease at around two years younger age than mixed breeds (p<0,05).
