The prevalence and display of brachycephalic airway syndrome among Pugs, Pekingese and Boxer breeds

The Objectives of the Final Paper: To identify the prevalence and display of brachicephalic syndrome among Pugs, Pekineses and Boxers. The Description of Acivities: • Performing quantitative analysis of 20 dogs with the problems of respiratory system. Thorough examining of brachiocephalic syndrome symptoms, their prevalence and display among 3 different breeds of dogs (Pugs, Pekineses and Boxers). The Methods of Research: • The collection of data for the reseach from July 10th 2014 till October 10th 2014 at a private veterinary clinic in Turkey. • The study of clinical case to identify the display of the syndrome. • The examination of the patient using laryngoscope. The identification data and anamnesis of the patient were collected. • The calculation of the proportion of syndrome occurrences between one separate breed and all breeds was carried out to determin the prevalence. • Microsoft Word 2010 and Microsoft Excel 2010 used to process the results of research. The Results and Conclutions: • The most frequent symptom of brachiocephalic syndrome was too long soft palate (in 95% of dogs), nostril stenosis occured in 90% of dogs. Everted saccules were the rarest (75% of dogs) • Boxsers were the most susceptable to all symptoms equally , Pekineses showed mainly two symptoms: nostril stenosis and everted saccules. Pugs showed all the three symptoms differently. • Not a single case with everted saccules only, it always went together with nostril stenosis. • The most susceptable breeds to brachicephalic syndrome were Pugs (85%). Boxers had the least predisposition to brachicephalic syndrome (20%)
