Isolation of Escherichia coli from healthy canine and with gastrointestinal disease

Aim of investigation: to isolate Escherichia coli from healthy and with gastrointestinal disease canine and determine antimicrobial resistance. Objectives: to isolate E. coli from healthy and with gastrointestinal disease canine. Determine multiple antimicrobial resistances from healthy dogs. Determine multiple antimicrobial resistances from canine with gastrointestinal disease. Compare isolated E. coli antimicrobial resistance from healthy and diseased dogs. Methods: a pure culture of E. coli isolated using differencial – diagnostic media – Drigalski lactose and Levine agars. β – lactamase was determined with β-lactamase reagent, indole – with Ehrlich reagent, hydrogen sulfide – with lead acetate, urea hydrolysis determined with litmus paper. Enzymatic activity determined with a variegated line test and hemolytic properties determined with blood agar. E. coli antimicrobial resistance determined using a modified Kirby - Bauer disk diffusion method. Results: the results showed that canine morbidity did not affect isolation of E. coli – we isolated these bacteria from all analyzed samples. E. coli strains isolated from healthy dogs characterized multidrug resistance for streptomycin (20 %), ampicillin (40 %), cefovecin (30 %), tetracycline (10 %), gentamicin (30 %), benzylpenicillin (100 %). E. coli in healthy dogs were not resistant for cephalexin, amoxicillin with clavulanic acid, sulfonamides, florfenicol. E. coli strains isolated from diseased dogs, characterized multidrug resistance for streptomycin (20 %), cephalexin (50 %), ampicillin (60 %), amoxicillin with clavulanic acid (50 %), cefovecin (30 %), tetracycline (40 %), sulfonamides (20 %), enrofloxacin (40 %), gentamicin (40 %), benzylpenicillin (90 %). E. coli strains in diseased dogs were not resistant for florfenicol
