Prevalence of dog cataract and the analysis of its risk factors

I was interested in what risk factors influenced dogs’ morbidity in cataract, as cataract is one of the main reasons of blindness for dogs. According to this, the aim and objectives of the work were formed. The main aim of the work is to analyze the prevalence of cataract among dogs and the influence of some risk factors on certain species. The objectives of the work: 1. To collect and generalize literary data on the topic of the work. 2. To analyze dogs’ tendency for cataract manifestation. 3. To determine cataract manifestation according to species, gender and age. 4. To ascertain the influence of inborn and acquired factors on cataract manifestation. 5. To determine the influence of diabetes on cataract morbidity. The conclusions of the work accomplished: 1. According to the data of foreign scientists, the lens of the dogs having cataract is thicker than healthy lens, and according to the data of Lithuanian scientists, the lens of ill dogs is thinner than the lens of a healthy eye. 2. The greatest morbidity was diagnozed for 16.3 percent of non-brood dogs. 3. The dogs up to 2 year old were diagnosed 4.7 percent morbidity of cataract, for 2-7 year-old dogs morbidity of cataract was diagnosed of 34.9 percent, the dogs over 8 years were diagnosed the morbidity of cataract of 60.5 percent. 4. It was determined that gender does not have any influence on cataract. 5. Morbidity of acquired cataracts is 72.1 percent of dogs and morbidity of inborn – 27.9 percent. 6. 23.3 percent of the studies dogs having cataract were influenced by the diabetes
