Individuals who experienced traumatic brain injury, recovery of motor and mental state through physical therapy in early stage of rehabilitation, depending on the duration of coma

Traumatic brain injury - is one of the most complicated problems in newdays medicine. Even using the newest equipment traumatic brain injuries are more frequent and severe. The aim of this study - to assess patients who had severe traumatic brain injury, recovery of motor and mental state through physical therapy, according to coma duration. Methods. The data were taken from department of Brain injuries (the first and second testing) and section of neurorehabilitation (the third and four testing), Kaunas University of Medicine. The subjects were patients with severe traumatic brain injury, whose level of consciousness was evaluated from 3 to 8 points, according to Glasgow coma scale. Recovery of motor and mental status changes before and after physical therapy sessions on the first and second test were evaluated for 52 patients, a third and fourth - 16. The first and second testing included an average age of patients - 11.9 ± 44.38 years and in the third and fourth - 54.81 years ± 20.56. Recovery of motor and mental state of patients were studied in two groups: the first group consisted of patients who had coma till one week (the first and second testing - 26 persons, the third and fourth - 6), and the second – the second ones, who had coma more than two weeks (first and second testing - 26 subjects, a third and fourth – 10 subjects). Motor recovery of patients was assessed according to the Motor Assessment Scale, the state of mind - in Mini Mental State Examination test. During physical therapy procedures were treated using ordinary means. Results. After examining of motor recovery during second test between the groups were found a statistically significant difference (p0,05). Also, assessing the mental state of recovery during the second test between the groups were found a statistically significant difference (p0,05). Statisticaly significant correlation was found between motor recovery during the fouth test and mental recovery of second test (p0.05). Conclusions. The duration of coma affect recovery of motor and mental state in the second test time: patients who had coma till one week observed significantly better recovery of motor and mental state using physical therapy than those who had coma more than two weeks (p
