Pregnancy and delivery after amniocentesis

Pregnancy and delivery after amniocentesis, the final project for a master‘s degree is written by Ieva Česnavičiūtė. Objective of this research was to analyse the outcomes of pregnancy and delivery following amniocentesis performed during the second trimester of the pregnancy at the Clinic of obstetrics and gynaecology, Kaunas Clinics, Lithuanian university of health sciences. The problems of the research were following: 1. To assess the frequency of identification of the pathologic karyotype. 2. To determine the ratio and character of complications after amniocentesis. 3. To assess the outcomes of pregnancy and delivery following amniocentesis performed during the second trimester of the pregnancy. Methods. To assess subjective complaints, complications, and the outcomes of the pregnancy following the transabdominal amniocentesis, the anonymous survey was performed. Medical information concerning previous pregnancies and deliveries as well as the results of amniotic fluid analysis was collected from ambulatory care documents. Participants of the research contained 244 (?) pregnant women who got amniocentesis done during the second trimester of the pregnancy in 2014 at the Clinic of obstetrics and gynaecology, Kaunas Clinics, Lithuanian university of health sciences. Results. Performing amniotic fluid analysis, pathologic karyotype was found in 23 out of 244 specimens (9,4 percent). During the anonymous survey, 66,95 percent of pregnant women (n = 154) did not express any complaints. However, 33,05 percent of the participants had various symptoms, including pain after amniocentesis (10 percent, n = 23), general weakness (13,9 percent, n = 32), pelvic ache (20,4 percent, n = 47), and tension in the lower abdomen (3,9 percent, n = 9). Outcomes of the pregnancy following amniocentesis contained successful delivery among 226 surveyed women (92,6 percent), medical abortion in 17 women (6,96 percent), and miscarriage in 1 woman (0,41 percent). 87,61 percent of surveyed women delivered naturally, while in 12,39 percent of cases Caesarean section was done. Conclussions: 1. Pathologic karyotype was found 9,4 percent of amniotic fluid analysis. The most common pathologic karyotype was trisomy 21. 2. After amniocentesis, more than half of pregnant women did not have any symptoms, while one third of participants most often complained with pelvic ache and general weakness for about 15 minutes; tension in the lower abdomen, short uterine spasms, and redness in the site of needle puncture were rarely mentioned. 3. 226 surveyed women (92,6 percent) delivered successfully; medical abortion was performed in 17 cases (6,96 percent), and one woman (0,41 percent) experienced miscarriage during first 72 hours after amniocentesis. Most participants delivered naturally, and 28 women had Caesarean section done. Mean weight of newborns was normal
