Comparative study of diagnostic methods value in diverticulosis and its complications diagnostics

The aim was to determine diverticulosis and its complications radiological and endoscopic diagnostical methods accuracy, compared to post-operative results. The objectives of the study was: 1) to estimate sensitivity and specificity of computed tomography (CT) diagnostic method compared to post-operative results, 2) to estimate sensitivity and specificity of ultrasonografhy method compared to post-operative results, 3) to estimate sensitivity and specificity of radiography with contrast enema compared to post-operative results and 4) to estimate sensitivity and specificity of colonoscopy compared to post-operative results. Participants of the study were the patients, who were hospitalized with diagnosis of non-complicated and complicated diverticulosis at Hospital of Lithuanian University of Health Sciences Kaunas Clinics during the 2013 - 2015 year period. Analyzed diagnostic methods were: CT, ultrasonography, radiography with contrast enema and colonoscopy. The diagnostic methods were considered positive when non-complicated or complicated diverticulosis was diagnosed by at least one of the previously mentioned findings. Post-operative results considered positive, when complicated or non-complicated diverticuliosis findings were confirmed during the operation or after histological examination. While estimating sensitivity and specificity of all the diagnostic methods in both groups, diagnostic method findings were compared to post-operative results. Results. Diverticulosis was found mostly in the left side of the colon. Diverticulosis is the most common in the older age. The average age of the patients was 65,73±14,77 years. In this study women had diverticuliosis more often than men, the ratio was 2:1. The most sensitive and specific method is CT in diverticulitis diagnostics, but the other analyzed diagnostic methods accuracy results are not statistically significant, because of low participants count
