Abdominal wall hernias and their surgical treatment in canines

Research: was carried in the small animal veterinary clinic X in Vilnius city. The paper volume 38 pages, it contains 2 tables, 21 images, 47 references were used. The research objective: examine the most often occurred abdominal wall hernias in canines and review its surgical treatment. Research tasks: 1. Examine and assess occurred abdominal wall hernias by its location, also canines‘ gender, age, breed. 2. Assess the frequency and nature of the infringement of complications which occurr before a surgical treatment. 3. Assess the frequency and nature of the infringement of complications which occurr after a surgical treatment. 4. Review the used methods of surgical treatment. Research methodology: Canines‘ investigation was selected according to the collected medical history. A history of the data on the animal's sex, breed, age, the first signs of the disease, the time and appearance. The study was applied to the general methods. General methods consisted of: inspection, palpation, percussion and auscultation. Statistical analysis was performed using Microsoft Excel (2013) software. Results and conclusions: 1. A slight correlation between genders was found, in conclusion the gender does not affect occurence of abdominal wall hernias. 65,63% of umbilical hernias consisted of canines under age of 1 year. 33,33% of inguinal hernias consisted of canines under age of 1 year. 26% of all occurred hernias was found in mixed breed dogs. The most often presented dogs of Pekingese, german shepherd, french bulldog and Yorkshire terrier breeds. 2. The most often presented complications which occurred before a surgical treatment was incarcerated hernias and strongly injured tissues around the area of herniation. The most rarely occurred elderly age of patient and pregnancy. 3. The most often presented complication which occured after a surgical treatment was infection of the wound, which might be brought in before or at the time of surgical treatment. Equally frequent occurred renewal of the wound and renewal of the hernia. 4. The only used method of surgical treatment in Lithuania is convergence of the edges of the wound. The advantages of this method are simplicity, it does not require special equipment or measures. Disadvantages – it might be difficult to put edges of the wound closer together because of strongly injured tissues around the area of herniation
