Various factor influence of treatment efficiency for horses with colic

The study was fulfilled at Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (LUHS) Veterinary Academy (VA) at Large Animal Clinic for 2013–2016. The work consists of 57 pages, containing 3 tables, 36 figures, 1 appendix and 69 references used. The aim was to clear up all probable factors of treatment that influence colic horse’s treatment efficancy. 22 horses were examinated (10 mare, 12 stallion), that come to Large Animal Clinic due to colic. Anamnesis of all horses were systematized thoroughly, case history, results of special horses with colic clinical examination, blood laboratory examination, rectal and nasogastric intubation were analized also schemes of treatment were systematized. Horses were of various breeds and ages. Trakehner horses were predominating breed (23 %). 10 – years – old horses were suffering from colic more often. Depending on clinical examination results that were previously done, horses were grouped in three groups by the choice of treatment: pharmaceutical 41 % (n = 9), surgical 41 % (n = 9) and both 18 % (n = 4). Symptomatic therapy was used for all cases. After systematized results of horses clinical examination data showed, that treatment of choice was influenced by the time since the owners noticed the signs to emergency in clinics. After analizing methods of treatment, their effictiveness, it was determined, that the most effective treatment was pharmaceutical (78 % recovered) when prescribing flunixin for pain relief, dexamethasone for anti-inflammatory therapy, butyl scopolamine bromide, dipyrone, drotaverine hydrochloride for spasms relieve. While applying fluid therapy with various infusion solutions, that are combined with each other and applying antibiotic therapy. Less effective was surgical treatment (22 % is recoved), which aims to eliminate the cause by surgical manipulations, and both treatments, if pharmaceutical treatment failed to restore the state of horse’s health, surgical treatment was applied (25 % recovered)
