Evaluation of effectiveness of rabbits some anesthesia protocols in Lithuanian and Hungarian small animal’s clinics

The main goals. To analyze the literature of the most popular anesthesia protocols of rabbits in Lithuania and Hungary. To determine which anesthesia protocol has better effect on rabbits. The main parts of thesis. The thesis consists of preface, review of literature (physiology of rabbits, characteristics of ketamine, xylazine, isoflurane and acepromazine); research data (materials and methods, results and discussion), conclusions and the list of literature. Thesis includes 7 tables, 6 pictures and 1 annex. Results. The research took place in Szent Istvan University, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (Budapest) and in the clinic of small animals in Kaunas. The objects of the work were six rabbits. Three of them were anesthetized with acepromazine/isoflurane combination (Budapest) and three with xylazine/ketamine combination (Kaunas). All rabbits had the same surgery, they were quite the same age and weight. All rabbits were observed before and during the surgery. The monitoring of anesthesia included evaluation of pain, depth of anesthesia, pulse and capillary refilling time, the color of mucous membranes, breathing rate and body temperature. The conclusions: 1. There are more than enough literature about rabbit’s anesthesia in English, but not enough in Lithuanian language; 2. The choice of anesthesia protocol in the clinics of small animals in different countries depends on the equipment they have. 3. The depth of anesthesia and pain killing effect is not sufficient, when xylazine/ketamine is used for anesthesia in rabbits; 4. Rabbits had the feeling of pain during all the surgery when using xylazine/ketamine; 5. Isoflurane decreases breathing rate and arterial blood pressure; 6. Using acepromazine/isoflurane and xylazine/ketamine the body temperature decreases to the critical point; 7. After surgery rabbits wake up faster when acepromazine/isoflurane is used; 8. An acepromazine/isoflurane combination in rabbit’s anesthesia is safer, more reliable and effective than that of xylazine/ketamine
