Job satisfaction of nursing staff in nursing and supportive treatment hospitals

Aim of the study was to investigate the job satisfaction of nursing staff in nursing and supportive treatment hospitals in Kaunas city and Kaunas district. Methods. Anonymous questioning of 93 nurses and 82 nursing assistants was performed in study hospitals. Statistical data analysis was done using statistical package SPSS, version 13.0. Results: The work to the respondents is mainly a mean for subsistence and possibility to help other person. The most of all nursing staff is satisfied with interpersonal relations with their leaders and colleagues, with the level of independence and recognition of personal efforts, and with possibility to use the competencies. The multiple logistic regression analysis revealed, that job satisfaction is greater for nursing assistants with odds ration (OR) of 4.08. Nurses assessed their health better than nursing assistants. The good health increased the chance for greater job satisfaction with OR of 8.7. Work related tiredness and increased pulse rate after work has had the significant negative and not to other factors related influence for job satisfaction. Conclusions. Nurses were more satisfied with their job in relation to nursing assistants. The work remuneration doesn‘t comply with the expectations of nursing staff. The positive relationship exists between job satisfaction and evaluation of work environment and factors of work organisation. The positive interpersonal relations, appropriate salary and good work conditions were recognised as the most important determinants for job satisfaction of nursing staff. Job satisfaction is positively related to health condition of nursing staff. Practical recommendations. Improvement of team work and interpersonal relations has to be assured for greater job satisfaction of nursing staff as well as introducing the means for relaxation and decrease of negative work influence to physical and mental health of personnel
