Pathomorphological diagnosis and analysis of mammary gland tumors in cats

Mammary gland tumors are one of the most common tumors seen in veterinary clinical practice. It is the third most common neoplasia in cats. According to the literature the mean age of tumor diagnosis is between 10-12 years. Siamese, tricolor and Domestic Short-hair cats are reported to have a higher incidence rate than other breeds. Our research was performed between April 2011 and December 2012 in Pathology center of Veterinary Academy of the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences. Samples for the research have been collected from “Jeruzalės veterinarijos gydykla” which is located in Vilnius and Dr. L. Kriaučeliūnas Small Animal Clinic of Lithuanian University of Health Sciences, Academy of Veterinary in Kaunas. In the centre of Pathology all the available samples were examined pathohistologically. The results of the research have showed that most of the mammary gland tumours occurred in mixed cats. Mixed cats represents 66,6 % of all investigated cases. Persian cats amounted to 12,5 % of all cases, Siamese – 12,5 % too, Russian blue – 4,3 % and Maine Coon – 4,3 %. Most of mammary gland tumors were found in cats aged between 9 and 10 years old. The youngest female cat in this research was 3 years old and the oldest female cat was 18 years old. Cats in this study was mainly 10 years. Grouping cats from our research by life stages showed that the majority of the cats are in 4th (mature cats) stage – 50 %. For this group are assigned 7 – 10 years old felines. Pathohistological research showed that 10 % of tumors in this investigation are benign, 75 % are malignant and 15 % are other pathologies (not tumors). Most of tumors are simple adenokarcinomas (52,9 %). In this investigation we found out that the most frequent mammary glanda carcinoma is cribriform carcinoma (44,4 %). Of all tumors in our research just two were fibrosarcoma. The objective of the research: To find out mammary gland prevalence for feline by doing pathomorphological analysis. Tasks of the research: 1. Using histological nomenclature to identify which mammary gland tumors are mostly diagnosed for cats; 2. To find out if feline's age are under influence for mammary's gland tumors morbidity; 3. To rate if feline's breed has any connection for mammary's gland tumors
