Risk assessment in detecting infectious markers among blood donors

The present paper focuses on the analysis of worldwide relevant issues related to ensuring donor blood safety and the occurrence of infectious markers both in Lithuania and in other countries of the world. An attempt is made to assess the potential risks of infectious markers prior to blood donation in order to avoid the risk of infections. The goal of the study is to assess the risk in detecting infectious markers among blood donors at the National Blood Center. The following are the objectives of the study: to analyze and compare the occurrence of infectious markers among blood donors at the National Blood Center and at its division in Panevėžys during 2008-2010, and to identify potential risks of infectious markers before donation. Research methods. The research was carried out at the National Blood Center and at its division in Panevėžys during the time period from May to October 2010. 710 respondents (blood donors) were randomly selected.
