Childbirth institutions and social factors links with maternal motivation to breastfeed

The aim of the study: To evaluate the Childbirth institutions and social factors links with maternal motivation to breastfeed Objectives of the study: 1) To evaluate the link between social factors and maternal motivation to breastfeed 2) To evaluate conformity of program \"baby-friendly hospital\" provisions in childbirth institution of Kaunas city; 3) To evaluate the link between childbirth institutions involved in the program \"baby-friendly hospital\" and women confidence to breastfeed from discharge of hospital. Method of assessment: Anonymous questionnaire. The study surveyed the Lithuanian Health Sciences University Hospital obstetrics department, Kaunas Christian maternity home, NGO Kaunas 2nd Clinical Hospital neonatal section. Throughout the study were distributed 300 questionnaires, of which 284 completed. The response rate - 94.6 percent. Data analysis was performed using the statistical package SPSS (version 20.0). Relationships between traits were assessed chi-square (χ2) test. Results and conclusions: Social factors: age, education, public support for breast-feeding and breast-feeding as \"economical\" way of feeding the baby, had a significant impact on the women motivation to breast-feed. The smallest influence on women's decision to feed baby naturally, had a husband, family support for breastfeed and public opinion. Not all of program \"Baby Friendly Hospital” criteria have been carried out properly in Kaunas city maternity institutions. Significantly large proportion of women said, that program criteria, which was followed the best, was: information about the benefits of breastfeeding baby, allowing to be with a newborn, a whole day, encouraging to breastfeed a newborn's by their needs. However, 20 percent of women surveyed reported, that they have received information brochures advertising the artificial food and 38 percent of infants were offered a pacifier. Links between the childbirth institutions in the program \"Baby Friendly Hospital” and the trust of women breastfeeding at discharge from hospital, was not found. Women's motivation to breastfeed, leaving the hospital fell 8.8 percent, comparing to their motivation to breast-feed before birth
