This thesis is a literature study describing the electrochemical characteristics of nickel and the interaction between nickel and carbon. Nickel has corrosion resistant characteristics because of the passive behavior it can achieve under certain circumstances. The passive behavior is described by cyclic voltammetry, Tafel plots and Pourbaix diagrams. Another area of use for nickel is as a catalyst during the growth of carbon nanotubes and nanofibers. Factors affecting the growth process of the nanotubes and nanofibers are presented.
