Semiconductor nanowires with diameters of the order of 100 nm and lengths of a few microns have many technological applications, and they provide a one-dimensional system for basic physics. A semiconductor nanowire with strong spin-orbit coupling (such as indium arsenide) in proximity with a superconductor is expected support Majorana bound states, a possible platform for topological quantum computing.
