An alkaline extraction at low temperature can be used to remove hemicelluloses from pulp but is currently only used for the production of high purity dissolving pulps because of the low reactivity of the produced pulps in the viscose process. A combination of PHK and alkaline extraction has, however, been shown to result in a pulp of good reactivity. In these studies, dissolving pulp of the highest purity was targeted and a high intensity prehydrolysis was applied. If viscose grade dissolving pulps is produced, a lower intensity prehydrolysis may be sufficient.
