Buildings are responsible for approximately 30 % of the final energy use in the world, and account for 40 % of the total energy use in Finland. A great deal of the energy used in Finland is used for space heating. Legislation for the energy efficiency of buildings has existed in Finland since 1976 and has since then gotten gradually stricter. The aim of this thesis was to find out how the regulations have affected the heat energy use of the apartment buildings in Helsinki, and to what extent they have affected it. Other factors that might have affected the energy use are also examined. In this thesis qualitative research methods were used.
